Animal husbandry enthusiasts and  breeders often struggle with disorganised record-keeping, relying on paper logs, spreadsheets, or memory to track feeding schedules, breeding cycles, and health records. 

Professional reptile breeder Kurt Livesley wanted to change the existing paper-based manual husbandry management system in Australia by digitising the process with a web and mobile application. 

Kurt and Elegant Media worked together in order to develop this application within a very short period of time. 

The result was Husbandry Wizard, a web and mobile app designed to streamline feeding and breeding record management.

Challenges Faced by Manual Record Keeping

Manual record-keeping is time-consuming, prone to errors, and inefficient for tracking long-term trends in husbandry management. In addition the remote location of many breeders, highlighted the need for a centralised, user-friendly solution that simplified animal husbandry management while ensuring accuracy and accessibility – even offline.

The  Husbandry Wizard web and mobile app revolutionises how keepers and breeders track feeding schedules, breeding cycles, and health records. 

Designed for animal enthusiasts of all levels, this intuitive platform transforms complex record-keeping into a seamless, stress-free experience.

The goal was to develop an intuitive, feature-rich application that would allow users to:

  • Track feeding schedules, quantities, and nutrition details
  • Record breeding pairs, birth dates, and lineage data
  • Access historical records for better decision-making
  • Replace paper-based systems with a secure, centralised digital platform

App Development Challenges & Solutions

1. Making the App Easy to Use & Navigate [User Experience (UX) Design]

Challenge: The Husbandry Wizard app needed to cater to a wide range of users from small-scale pet owners to professional breeders. Each individual user would have different levels of technical expertise, so it was important to ensure simplicity while maintaining powerful functionality.

Solution: Taking into account feedback from husbandry enthusiasts the Elegant Media UI/UX team set to work and designed an intuitive interface with easy navigation, customisable fields and clear data visualisation.

2. Data Security & Offline Accessibility [Offline Functionality] 

Challenge: Many breeders work in remote locations with unreliable internet access therefore storing sensitive breeding and health data securely while allowing for offline app functionality was essential.

Solution: The Elegant Media development team in-built local storage capabilities within the Husbandry Wizard app and also configured optional cloud synchronisation using encrypted databases. This provided absolute data security and accessibility even without an internet connection.

3. The App should work on all devices [Cross-Platform Compatibility]

Challenge: To maximise reach and usage, the Husbandry Wizard app needed to work seamlessly on both iOS and Android devices without performance issues.

Solution: The Husbandry Wizard app was built on a cross-platform framework using a single codebase. This enabled Elegant Media to  deliver a native-like experience on both operating systems.

The successful delivery of the Husbandry Wizard Mobile App represents the perfect synergy between Elegant Media’s technical expertise and our client’s vision. This project showcased our ability to conceive, develop and deploy an intuitive, user-friendly high-impact digital solution for husbandry management.
